About Us

The Region of Waterloo provides more than 60 per cent of municipal services in Waterloo Region. Our work makes a difference in residents’ lives every day. Our work includes: 

  • Providing homes for everyone by leading community-wide action planning, operating affordable housing programs, and providing long-term care and supportive housing for seniors.

  • Getting you where you need to go through transit, major roadways and traffic signals, trails, and the Regional airport.

  • Supporting you to work through delivering employment and income support programs, coordinating affordable child care, and economic development planning. 

  • Protecting our environment through safe drinking water and wastewater treatment, garbage collection and diversion programs. 

  • Keeping you healthy and safe through health inspections, dental clinics, infectious disease prevention and vaccinations, neighbourhood health programs, parenting and child health programs, Paramedic Services and road safety initiatives. 

  • Committing to Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion by starting and keeping respectful relationships with First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities and helping to build a region where residents feel seen, valued, and heard. 

  • Offering cultural opportunities and experiences through programs and services at libraries and museums. 

Our Departments

The Region of Waterloo's essential services are delivered by eight departments:

  • Planning, Development and Legislative Services 

  • Public Health and Paramedic Services 

  • Resident Experience, Strategy and Communications 

  • Transportation Services 

Regional Council provides direction and leadership for the organization. Council includes the Regional Chair, eight directly elected Regional Councillors, and mayors of the seven local municipalities. They are elected to serve a four-year term. 

With their direction, Region of Waterloo staff proudly work alongside community partners and other levels of government to build a better community for today and generations to come.  

Did you know?

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo was officially established on January 1, 1973. The new municipal government replaced the former County of Waterloo that had been established by the Province in 1853. You can find municipal records from years past in the Region of Waterloo Archives.  

Our Vision, Mission and Core Value

The Region of Waterloo’s Vision, Mission and Core Values statements capture the heart of who we are, the vision we have for the communities we serve, and the ways we intentionally choose to work to achieve this vision. The Strategic Plan is how we will implement these statements.

Waterloo Region is part of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum. This treaty guides our work at the Region of Waterloo as we live out our core value.
